The Danger of "Silvering"
Many homeowners like the look of silvered cedar, but in Tauranga's climate, "silver" often means "starving." When cedar is left unprotected, UV rays destroy the lignin (natural glue) in the wood. This leads to cupping (boards curling at the edges), splitting, and nail popping. Once cedar warps, it cannot be painted flat again. Regular oiling isn't just cosmetic, it keeps the timber supple and weathertight.

Our Restoration Process
- The Soft Wash (No Blasting!): You should never high-pressure water blast cedar; it raises the grain and damages the fibers. We use a gentle chemical soft-wash to kill mould spores and lift grime without harming the wood.
- Surface Preparation: For badly weathered areas, we may need to lightly sand or use a wood brightener to remove the grey oxidation layer and reveal the fresh timber underneath.
- Deep Penetration Oiling: We don't just coat the surface. We flood the timber with premium migrating oils. These oils penetrate deep into the cellular structure of the wood, preventing moisture ingress while allowing the timber to breathe.
We Use What Works in NZ
We avoid cheap "film-forming" stains that sit on top of the wood and eventually peel or flake. We partner with industry leaders in migrating oils:
- Wood-X: Known for its deep penetration and stability in rural/coastal settings.
- Dryden: A premium oil that enhances the natural grain and allows for easy maintenance coats in the future.
- CD50: Excellent for deep restoration of dried-out timber.

Complete Timber Maintenance
Your deck takes more punishment than any other surface in your home. Standing water and foot traffic destroy cheap stains.
- Deck Restoration: We strip back old, peeling coatings and apply durable decking oils designed for high traffic.
- Fence Staining: Enhance your property borders with a uniform spray finish in popular tones like "Black" or "Rustic Oak."
Cedar Care Frequently Asked Questions
In Tauranga, North and West-facing walls usually need a maintenance coat every 2–3 summers. South-facing walls can often go 4–5 years. We can set up a scheduled maintenance plan so you never miss a cycle.
Likely not. That black layer is often surface mould feeding on old oil. Our chemical wash can usually remove this and restore the golden timber beneath without needing replacement.

Don't Let Your Timber Warp.
